Procedures

Maxillofacial prosthodontics is the reconstruction of oral or facial structures lost during surgery, from trauma, or are congenitally missing.  This can result in cosmetic deficiencies and has negative effects on speaking, swallowing, and eating.

If you have been diagnosed with oral cancer and will begin chemotherapy, radiotherapy, or surgical intervention, a consultation with Dr. Oyama or Dr. Kagawa is recommended.  We work and communicate closely with your head and neck surgeon, oral surgeon, and oncologists as part of your treatment team to optimize your pre and post care.

What does getting a Maxillofacial Prosthesis involve?

A thorough assessment of the surgical site will first be completed, and preliminary impressions or molds will be made to plan the proper type of prosthesis.  A secondary impression will be made, and will be carefully shaped to optimize the cosmetic result for prostheses replacing lost facial structures, or to enhance speech and swallowing for oral prostheses.
